# Update a member’s role

`PATCH /organizations/{organizationId}/members/{memberPrincipalId}`

## Request

Sets the member’s organization role. Requires a role with member management (owner or admin). Assigning `owner` transfers ownership: only the current owner can do this, the target member becomes the owner, and the caller is demoted to `admin`; transferring ownership to yourself is rejected. The current owner cannot be demoted directly (409) — transfer ownership by promoting another member instead.

## Response `200`

The member’s new role together with the previous one.

  - `principalId` string, required: Principal ID of the updated member.
  - `role` 'owner' | 'admin' | 'full_editor' | 'content_editor', required: Role the member now holds.
  - `previousRole` 'owner' | 'admin' | 'full_editor' | 'content_editor', required: Role the member held before this change.

## Other responses

- `400`: Validation failed. The response `message` names the first invalid field.
- `401`: Missing, invalid, expired, or revoked API key.
- `403`: The authenticated principal lacks the required capability.
- `404`: The resource does not exist or is outside the principal’s access scope.
- `409`: The request conflicts with the current state of the resource.
- `429`: Rate limit exceeded. Retry after the number of seconds in the `Retry-After` header.
