# Submit or autosave an item

`PATCH /portal/{slug}/items/{key}`

## Request

Submit a value for an item. Set `draft: true` for autosave (partial value, does not advance the state machine). Set `draft: false` (the default) to mark the item as submitted. Files must be uploaded first via the upload endpoint.

- `400`: Invalid request — malformed body or query parameters
- `401`: No valid portal session
- `404`: Resource not found
- `413`: Payload too large
- `422`: Validation error — the body shape is correct but values are invalid
