# Delete a contact

`DELETE /api/v1/contacts/{id}`

## Request

Soft-delete a contact so it drops out of lists, audiences and sends.

Soft delete: the contact leaves every list and audience immediately, and the retention sweep hard-purges it after 90 days.

This is not POPIA erasure: it does not anonymise the record. Use POST /api/v1/contacts/{id}/erase for a data-subject erasure request.

- `400`: Validation failed
- `401`: Unauthorized: missing or invalid API key
- `402`: Insufficient wallet balance

- `422`: Understood but refused: the request is well-formed, the action is not permitted for this resource
- `429`: Rate limited
- `500`: Internal error
- `502`: An upstream provider refused or failed the request
- `503`: Channel or send queue unavailable
