# Ask a question about notes

`POST /v1/notes/query`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://api.blinq.me`
- URL: `https://api.blinq.me/v1/notes/query`
- Auth: HTTP bearer

Generates an answer to a question using the authenticated user's note titles and note bodies (AI summaries for recordings, saved text for typed notes). Transcripts are not used, and each note body is truncated to 8,000 UTF-16 code units.

Pass between 1 and 8 of your own `note_ids` to answer from specific notes, or omit the field to let the API select up to 10 of the most relevant notes automatically.

The answer contains inline markers such as `[1]` or `[1, 2]`: one-based positions in `citations`, where each unique note is numbered in order of first appearance and repeat references reuse the same number.

When no accessible notes match, the answer is `No accessible notes were available to answer this question.` If an answer cannot be generated, the request fails with `503` and the message `Blinq could not generate an answer. Try again later.`

Requires the `blinq:notes:read` scope.

## Request body

- object
  - `query` string, required: A natural-language question. Answers draw on note titles and note bodies (the AI summary for a recording or the saved text of a typed note), not transcripts. Each note body is truncated to 8,000 UTF-16 code units.
  - `note_ids` string[]: Restricts the answer to between 1 and 8 notes you own. Omit to let the API select up to 10 of the most relevant notes automatically. IDs of inaccessible notes are ignored.

## Response `200`

The generated answer and its cited notes.

- object: The generated answer and its cited notes.
  - `answer` string, required: The generated answer. Inline markers such as `[1]` or `[1, 2]` are one-based positions in `citations`. Each unique note is numbered in order of first appearance, and repeat references reuse the same number. When no accessible notes match, the answer is `No accessible notes were available to answer this question.`
  - `citations` object[], required: The unique source notes, in order of first appearance in the answer. Empty when the answer has no citations.
    - `id` string, required: The cited note ID.
    - `title` string, nullable, required: The custom title of the cited note, otherwise its generated title, or `null` when it has neither.
    - `share_url` string, required: A URL to view the cited note in a browser. Access follows the existing sharing settings; querying notes does not change them.

## Other responses

- `400`: Bad request - Invalid query parameters or body. See `details` for each failing field
- `401`: Unauthorized - Missing or invalid API key
- `403`: Forbidden - Missing scope, insufficient permission, or the plan does not include this operation
- `413`: Payload too large - The request body exceeds the maximum allowed size
- `415`: Unsupported media type - The request body must be `application/json`
