# Get current rates

`GET /api/v1/rates`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://api.bitcompare.net`
- URL: `https://api.bitcompare.net/api/v1/rates`
- Auth: one of:
  - none
  - HTTP bearer

List current rates across providers, optionally filtered by symbol, category, or provider. For "what is the best yield on BTC right now?" style questions, ALWAYS pass category="lending"/"borrowing"/"staking" — an unfiltered call mostly returns spot prices (category="price"), not yields.

      - `rate` number, required: Rate value; semantics depend on unitType (percentage APY vs absolute price)
      - `coinId` string, nullable, required: Canonical coin id, e.g. `bitcoin` (nullable)
      - `providerSymbol` string, nullable
      - `metadata` object, nullable
      - `unitType` 'percentage' | 'absolute' | 'ratio'
      - `unitSymbol` string, nullable
      - `lastUpdated` string, required: ISO-8601 timestamp of the most recent rate refresh
      - `ageSeconds` integer: Seconds since lastUpdated — use this to discount stale rows rather than trusting them as current
      - `stale` boolean: True when this row is old enough that it should be treated with caution (audit BC-9)
    - `count` number, required: Number of rates returned
    - `timestamp` string: ISO-8601 response timestamp (omitted on /rates/{symbol})
    - `symbol` string: Present on the /rates/{symbol} variant

## Other responses

- `401`: Missing or invalid API key
- `429`: Plan rate limit exceeded — see X-RateLimit-* headers and Retry-After
