# Update RnaOligo

`PATCH /api/v3/rna-oligo/{rna_oligo_id}`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://{tenant_name}.benchling.com`
- URL: `https://{tenant_name}.benchling.com/api/v3/rna-oligo/{rna_oligo_id}`
- Auth: HTTP bearer

Update an RNA Oligo. The `id` path parameter identifies the Oligo to update.

## Sequence specification

To replace the sequence, provide exactly one of the following. Omit all sequence fields to keep the existing sequence.
- `bases` — plain nucleotide sequence
- `helm` — HELM notation (requires the modified nucleotides feature to be enabled)
- `customNotation` with `customNotationId` — vendor-specific notation (requires custom syntaxes to be enabled; both fields must be set together)

## Path parameters

- `rna_oligo_id` string, required

## Request body

- UpdateRnaOligoInput
  - `aliases` string[]: Array of aliases
  - `allowCustomFieldDeletion` boolean: When true, custom fields present on the entity but omitted from the update payload will be deleted. When false or omitted, omitting existing custom fields is an error. Defaults to false.
  - `annotations` OligoAnnotationInput[]: Annotations on the Oligo.
    - `color` string: Hex color when displaying the annotation. A random color is assigned if omitted.
    - `customFields` CustomFieldInput[]: Custom fields on the annotation.
      - `name` string, required: Name of the custom field.
      - `value` string: Value of the custom field. Defaults to an empty string if omitted.
    - `end` integer, required: 0-based exclusive end index. For ranges ending at the sequence end, API responses return `sequenceLength`, never `0`. On input, `sequenceLength` or `0` may be used.
    - `name` string, required: Name of the annotation.
    - `notes` string: Text notes on the annotation. Defaults to an empty string if omitted.
    - `start` integer, required: 0-based inclusive start index.
    - `type` string, required: Feature type of the annotation.
  - `archiveReason` string: Why it is being archived. Required when `archived` is `true`, and not allowed when unarchiving.
  - `archived` boolean: Set to `true` to archive or `false` to unarchive it. Archiving requires `archiveReason`.
  - `authorIds` string[]
  - `bases` string: Bases of the Oligo. Mutually exclusive with `helm` and `customNotation`.
  - `customFields` object: Custom fields set on the Oligo.
  - `customNotation` string: Sequence in a vendor-specific custom notation syntax. Requires custom syntaxes to be enabled. When `customNotation` is set, `customNotationId` is required. Mutually exclusive with `bases` and `helm`.
  - `customNotationId` string: ID of the custom notation syntax used to interpret `customNotation`. When `customNotation` is set, `customNotationId` is required; omit both when using `bases` or `helm`.
  - `entityRegistryId` string: Registry ID to assign to the entity. When registering, specifying this value sets the registry ID of the entity. When already registered, specifying this value updates the entity's registry ID. If set, naming_strategy must be unspecified.
  - `folderId` string
  - `helm` string: HELM notation for the oligo sequence and chemical modifications. Requires the modified nucleotides feature to be enabled. Mutually exclusive with `bases` and `customNotation`.
  - `name` string: Name of the item.
  - `namingStrategy` 'NEW_IDS' | 'IDS_FROM_NAMES' | 'DELETE_NAMES' | 'SET_FROM_NAME_PARTS' | 'REPLACE_NAMES_FROM_PARTS' | 'KEEP_NAMES' | 'REPLACE_ID_AND_NAME_FROM_PARTS': Strategy to use for labeling the item in the registry if registering. If one is specified, the entity_registry_id must be unspecified.
  - `registryId` string, nullable: A not null value means the entity should be registered. A null value means it should be unregistered. If not null, the value must match the registry of the item's schema.
  - `schemaFields` object
  - `schemaId` string

## Response `200`

OK

- RnaOligo: Represents a short single-stranded RNA oligonucleotide in Benchling's molecular biology platform. RNA oligos are synthetic sequences used in applications such as RNA interference (siRNA, shRNA), antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs), mRNA therapeutics, or CRISPR guide RNAs. Each oligo stores its nucleotide base sequence, annotations for features of interest, and chemical modifications (see ModifiedNucleotide) such as 2'-O-methyl sugars or phosphorothioate backbones that enhance stability and efficacy. RNA oligos can be registered in the Registry with unique identifiers, organized in folders, and linked to other entities via schema fields. Unlike RnaSequence, oligos are specifically designed for shorter, synthesizable sequences. Also referred to as RNA probes or therapeutic oligonucleotides depending on their application.

    - `name` string, nullable
    - `value` string, nullable
  - `entityRegistryId` string, nullable: The registry-assigned identifier for this item (e.g. its registry ID shown in the UI), present only once the item has been registered. Null if the item is not registered.

  - `registrationOrigin` RegistrationOrigin: Captures the provenance of an entity's registration into the registry. The `originEntry` links to the `DocumentLike` (typically an entry or notebook) from which the entity was registered, providing traceability back to the original experimental context. The `registeredAt` timestamp records when the registration occurred. This information helps scientists understand where registered entities came from and when they were added to the registry.
