# Generate Ephemeral API Key

`POST /api/v1/keys/ephemeral/generate`

## Request

Generate a new ephemeral API key for playground use.

**No authentication required.** Returns a temporary key that:
- Expires after 24 hours
- Limited to 100 API calls
- Tracked individually (not shared between users)
- Auto-deletes when expired

**Use Cases:**
- Playground users exploring the API
- Quick testing without signup
- Trial integrations

**Upgrade Path:**
When limits are reached, users can:
1. Generate a new ephemeral key (instant, no signup)
2. Sign up for unlimited access at https://www.bellatorsi.com/pricing

**Security:**
- Keys are cryptographically secure (128-bit entropy)
- Usage tracked per key for abuse prevention
- Automatic expiry prevents key leakage issues

Ephemeral key generated successfully

  - `api_key` string, required: The generated ephemeral API key
  - `expires_at` string, required: ISO 8601 expiry timestamp
  - `usage_limit` integer, required: Maximum number of API calls allowed
  - `usage_remaining` integer, required: Remaining API calls
  - `type` string, required: Key type (ephemeral)
  - `tier` string: Issued tier. demo or free.
  - `note` string, required: Usage instructions and upgrade information

## Other responses

- `429`: Generation rate limit exceeded — caller has generated too many keys today (default: 5 keys/IP/day). Retry tomorrow or sign up for unlimited access.
- `500`: Failed to generate key (unexpected internal error)
- `503`: Key generation temporarily unavailable — Redis backend is unreachable and the service is configured in fail-closed mode. Retry shortly.
