# Look up whether an email is already registered.

`POST /api/v1/auth/email-exists`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://api.avatarfactory.io` (the document declares no server; this is the origin it was published from)
- URL: `https://api.avatarfactory.io/api/v1/auth/email-exists`
- Auth: one of:
  - API key in cookie `session`
  - HTTP bearer

<br/>Returns ``{"exists": true}`` if the local ``users`` table has a row<br/>with this email (case-insensitive), otherwise ``{"exists": false}``.<br/><br/>The SPA uses this to decide whether to show a LOGIN (password only)<br/>or REGISTER (full name + password) form after the email step. The<br/>endpoint does not require authentication.

  - `email` string, required: Email to look up

## Response `200`

OK

- EmailExistsResponse
  - `exists` boolean, required: True if a user row with that email exists locally

## Other responses

- `400`: Bad Request
- `422`: Unprocessable Entity
