# Divisional charts — Varga

`POST /v1/astro/divisional`

## Request

Computes all 16 Vedic divisional charts (Varga charts) for a given
birth date, time, and location.

**What are divisional charts?**
In Vedic astrology, the birth chart (D1) is divided into progressively finer
subdivisions to reveal different areas of life. Each divisional chart isolates
a specific domain — the D9 Navamsha reveals spouse and dharma, the D10 Dashamsha
reveals career, the D60 Shashtyamsha is the most subtle and reveals karmic residue
from past lives.

**The 16 charts returned:**
- D1 — Rashi (natal chart)
- D2 — Hora (wealth)
- D3 — Drekkana (siblings)
- D4 — Chaturthamsha (property)
- D7 — Saptamsha (children)
- D9 — Navamsha (spouse, dharma) — the most consulted divisional chart
- D10 — Dashamsha (career)
- D12 — Dwadashamsha (parents)
- D16 — Shodashamsha (vehicles)
- D20 — Vimshamsha (spirituality)
- D24 — Chaturvimshamsha (education)
- D27 — Bhamsha (vitality)
- D30 — Trimshamsha (misfortunes)
- D40 — Khavedamsha (auspicious effects)
- D45 — Akshavedamsha (all life matters)
- D60 — Shashtyamsha (subtle karmic residue)

Each chart shows every planet's sign placement within that divisional
subdivision, with its dignity there (exalted, debilitated, own sign, friendly,
neutral or enemy) and whether it is vargottama (same sign as in D1). When the
birth time is known, each chart also has its own lagna, every planet's
whole-sign house from that lagna, and a `houses` table per chart (sign, lord
and occupants of each house). Use the D9 alongside the D1 for most
interpretive work.

**Ayanamsa:** All positions are sidereal. Default is Lahiri.

Also known as Varga charts or Amsha charts. Only the requested chart_type is returned. To get all sixteen charts, omit the chart_type parameter.

## Request body

- DivisionalRequest
  - `location` string, nullable: City name to resolve to lat/lon/tz automatically. Example: 'Mumbai' or 'New Delhi, India'. If provided, latitude, longitude and timezone are not required.
  - `name` string: Person name associated with the birth record
  - `date` string, required: Birth date in YYYY-MM-DD format
  - `time` string, nullable: Birth time in HH:MM 24-hour format. If omitted, sunrise chart is used as fallback.
  - `latitude` number, nullable: Latitude. Required if location not provided.
  - `longitude` number, nullable: Longitude. Required if location not provided.
  - `timezone` string, nullable: IANA timezone. Required if location not provided (unless utc_offset is given). For dates before the zone adopted a standard time, the birthplace's local mean time (longitude / 15 hours) is used.
  - `utc_offset` string, nullable: Optional explicit UTC offset of the birth time, as ±HH:MM or ±HH:MM:SS (e.g. '+04:51:31' for Bombay mean time). Overrides the offset `timezone` would give. Use it when the birth record states the offset, or for historical local times the IANA database cannot represent.
  - `ayanamsa` 'lahiri' | 'raman' | 'kp' | 'tropical': Sidereal ayanamsa mode used in calculations
  - `chart_type` string, nullable: Return only this divisional chart (e.g. D9). Omit for all standard charts.

    - `D9` object, required: Navamsha — spouse, dharma, and deeper soul purpose. A primary divisional chart.
    - `D10` object, required: Dashamsha — career and professional life
    - `D12` object, required: Dwadashamsha — parents and ancestral karma
    - `D16` object, required: Shodashamsha — vehicles and comforts

    - `D24` object, required: Chaturvimshamsha — education and learning
    - `D27` object, required: Bhamsha — strength and physical vitality
    - `D30` object, required: Trimshamsha — misfortunes and evils. Unequal portions per BPHS: odd signs Mars 5° → Aries, Saturn 5° → Aquarius, Jupiter 8° → Sagittarius, Mercury 7° → Gemini, Venus 5° → Libra; even signs reversed into the lords' even signs (Taurus, Virgo, Pisces, Capricorn, Scorpio). Every body is placed, Sun and Moon included, as in Jagannatha Hora.
    - `D40` object, required: Khavedamsha — auspicious and inauspicious effects
    - `D45` object, required: Akshavedamsha — all matters of life
    - `D60` object, required: Shashtyamsha — all matters, most subtle divisional chart. 60 parts of 0°30', counted from the planet's own sign (BPHS; Jagannatha Hora default).
    - `houses` object, nullable: Whole-sign houses of each varga chart, counted from that chart's lagna: {chart: [{house, sign, sign_num, lord, planets}]}. Present only when the birth time is known. Each planet entry in a chart also carries house, dignity (exalted, debilitated, own_sign, friendly, neutral, enemy; the seven classical planets) and is_vargottama (same sign as in D1).
    - `birth_time_provided` boolean: Whether a precise birth time was provided. False when birth time was not supplied or treated as unknown — calculations using this field will have lagna-dependent accuracy limits.
