# Jaimini Char Dasha

`POST /v1/astro/char-dasha`

## Request

Computes Jaimini Char Dasha — a sign-based dasha system from the Jaimini school of astrology. Returns mahadasha and antardasha periods starting from the ascendant (Lagna), with the current active mahadasha and antardasha highlighted. Method: K.N. Rao, as in his own dated case notes. The sequence runs forward when the 9th sign from the Lagna is savya (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius) and backward otherwise; period years count to the sign lord (savya forward, apasavya backward) minus one, 12 for the lord in its own rashi, with no year added or taken off for an exalted or debilitated lord (JHora's K.N. Rao option adds/subtracts one). Scorpio and Aquarius count to the co-lord outside the sign, or with both outside to the one with more planets, then the one further advanced. With `cycles` 2 or 3, every cycle repeats the first cycle's years. Antardashas are 12 equal parts (each as many months as the mahadasha has years); K.N. Rao: they run forward or backward by the 9th sign from the mahadasha sign (the same rule the Lagna uses), starting from the next sign, and the mahadasha sign's own antardasha comes last. Request JSON follows BirthInput plus `cycles` (1–3): `name`, `date` (YYYY-MM-DD), `time` (HH:MM, required), either `location` or `latitude`/`longitude`/`timezone`, `ayanamsa`.

## Request body

- CharDashaRequest: Jaimini Char Dasha — extends :class:`TimedBirthInput` with ``cycles``. Birth fields: ``name``, ``date``, ``time``, ``latitude``, ``longitude``, ``timezone`` (or ``location``), ``ayanamsa``. Additional: ``cycles`` (1–3).
  - `location` string, nullable: City name to resolve to lat/lon/tz automatically. Example: 'Mumbai' or 'New Delhi, India'. If provided, latitude, longitude and timezone are not required.
  - `name` string: Person name associated with the birth record
  - `date` string, required: Birth date in YYYY-MM-DD format
  - `time` string, required: Birth time in HH:MM 24-hour format. Required: this endpoint has no sunrise fallback.
  - `latitude` number, nullable: Latitude. Required if location not provided.
  - `longitude` number, nullable: Longitude. Required if location not provided.
  - `timezone` string, nullable: IANA timezone. Required if location not provided (unless utc_offset is given). For dates before the zone adopted a standard time, the birthplace's local mean time (longitude / 15 hours) is used.
  - `utc_offset` string, nullable: Optional explicit UTC offset of the birth time, as ±HH:MM or ±HH:MM:SS (e.g. '+04:51:31' for Bombay mean time). Overrides the offset `timezone` would give. Use it when the birth record states the offset, or for historical local times the IANA database cannot represent.
  - `ayanamsa` 'lahiri' | 'raman' | 'kp' | 'tropical': Sidereal ayanamsa mode used in calculations
  - `cycles` integer: Dasha cycles to compute (1-3). K.N. Rao: every cycle repeats the first cycle's signs, order and years.

## Response `200`

Successful Response

- ApiResponseCharDashaResponse
  - `success` boolean: True if the request succeeded
  - `message` string: Human-readable status message
  - `data` CharDashaResponse, required
    - `birth_time_provided` boolean: True when a birth time was supplied. False when it was not: house, Ascendant and Moon-dependent results then carry the accuracy limits of an unknown birth time.
    - `atmakaraka` string, nullable, required
    - `start_rashi` string, required
    - `start_rashi_index` integer, required
    - `karakas` object, required
    - `current_mahadasha` string, nullable, required
    - `current_antardasha` string, nullable, required
    - `periods` CharMahadasha[], required
      - `rashi` string, required
      - `rashi_index` integer, required
      - `years` integer, required: Mahadasha length (K.N. Rao): signs counted from the rashi to its lord (forward for savya, backward for apasavya rashis) minus one, 12 when the lord is in the rashi; no year is added or taken off for an exalted or debilitated lord. Range 1–12. Scorpio and Aquarius: the co-lord outside the sign; with both outside, the one with more planets, then the one further advanced in its sign. Every cycle repeats the first cycle's years.
      - `start_date` string, required
      - `end_date` string, required
      - `antardashas` CharAntardasha[], required: The 12 antardashas, each lasting as many months as the mahadasha has years (K.N. Rao). They run forward when the 9th sign from the mahadasha sign is savya (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius) and backward otherwise, starting from the next sign; the mahadasha sign's own antardasha is the last.
        - `rashi` string, required
        - `rashi_index` integer, required
        - `years` integer, required
        - `start_date` string, required
        - `end_date` string, required
