# Get asset download URL

`GET /assets/{asset_id}/download`

## Request

- Base URL: `https://api.aspect.inc`
- URL: `https://api.aspect.inc/assets/{asset_id}/download`
- Auth: API key in header `Authorization`

Get a temporary URL for one of the asset's files.

Every URL supports range requests. For `original`, each response's `ETag` is the asset's `manifest_id`:
to resume a download without mixing two versions of the file, send that `ETag` back in `If-Range`.

## Path parameters

- `asset_id` string, uuid, required: The ID of the asset to download

## Query parameters

- `variant` 'original' | 'stream_proxy' | 'preview': A file a user can download: the uploaded original, the web-playable stream proxy, or the preview image.
- `prefer_custom_thumbnail` boolean: For `preview`, return the custom thumbnail when one is set instead of the generated preview.

## Response `200`

Successful Response

- AssetDownloadGetResponse: API response schema for direct asset file download URLs.
  - `url` string, required: Temporary URL for the upload or download
  - `url_expires_at` string, date-time, required: UTC datetime when the URL expires

## Other responses

- `422`: Validation Error
