THE LAKOTA WINTER COUNTS (waníyetu wówapi) — the pictographic calendars of the Plains: one image per year, painted on bison hide by a designated KEEPER who chose in council the single event by which the year would be remembered; the year running FIRST SNOW TO FIRST SNOW, so every winter straddles two Gregorian years — and the system records YEARS ONLY, a resolution this engine honours by taking a year, never a date. THE SYNCHRONIZATION IS THE SYSTEM'S OWN PROOF: the 1833 LEONID STORM — 'THE YEAR THE STARS FELL' — appears in nearly every count ever collected, the shared image by which Mallery locked the whole tradition to the Western calendar. AND ONE YEAR IS PROVEN BY ASTRONOMY AT LOAD: the eclipse-of-the-sun winter of 1869–70 — the engine's own eclipse machinery must find the TOTAL eclipse peaking 7 AUGUST 1869 or boot fails: a keeper's brushstroke verified by celestial mechanics. Four cross-count anchor winters served; the seventy-image Lone Dog roster DEFERRED BY NAME for its own transcription round. OPENS THE CATALOGUE'S 42ND TRADITION. Pure compute, no LLM.
