# Release a held message to agents

`POST /v1/messages/{id}/release`

## Request

Releases a [held](https://agentboxd.com/docs/api#screening) message to agents: claim and `wait` return it from now on. Returns the message with `screening.state: "released"`. Safe to repeat. Emits `message.released` (who, when, and why it was held). `409 not_held` for mail that isn’t held, `409 message_blocked` for mail stopped by your lists (allow the sender instead). Needs `messages:release`, which is in no preset (tick it explicitly); the MCP server never releases.

Permission: `messages:release`.
